Western wear style tips
Western wear tips about how to do it right and look like a real cowboy and country girl.
- Have a cowboy hat made of fur-based felt, straw or, less often, leather. They are sold with a tall, rounded crown and a wide flat brim. They have a simple sweat band on the inside to stabilize the fit of the head, and usually a small decorative hat band on the outside of the crown. Hats are customized by creasing the crown and rolling the brim. Hats can be manufactured in virtually any color, but are most often seen in shades of beige, brown and black. Today’s cowboy hats have remained basically unchanged in construction and design since the first one was created in 1865 by B. Stetson.
- Wear cowboy boots made from leather. Traditional cowboy boots have narrow toes, high heels that slope under the foot, and leather tops that reach halfway up the shins. There are styles out there for every taste imaginable, and the portion of the boot visible beneath your trouser can feature everything from leather tooling to contrast-colored stitching and bright vegetable dyes. If you’re fond of memorable footwear, you’ll love cowboy boots.
- Wear demin. Any demin will do (pants, shirt or jacket).
- Wear a shirt that has pearl snaps instead of buttons. The shirt can be plain, plaid, striped or even embroidered — the more garish the better.
- You need to wear a big belt and a giant belt buckle.
- Bolo ties which are a piece of neckwear similar to the necktie. They are a piece of braided leather or cord that traditionally have silver tips and an ornamental clasp. They are sometimes also called “Bola Tie”, “String Tie” or “Texas Tie”.
- A favorite part of country accessories is the turquoise stone tied to silver, either on a ring, bracelet, even on belt buckles.
- The bandanas that are a favorite part of many western wear enthusiasts. Whether worn with a fancy slide or simply knotted, with the pendants draping in front of or behind the wearer, the neckerchief is one of those iconic pieces of apparel that say “cowboy” loud and clear.
- Boot straps. As Cowboy boots are pulled on and off, they have small leather loops (“bootstraps”) to assist with this.
- Leather or suede jacket or vest, preferably with fringe.
- Leather chaps which were often worn to protect the cowboy’s legs from cactus spines and prevent the fabric from wearing out.
- The spur, which is a metal tool designed to be worn in pairs on the heels of riding boots for the purpose of directing a horse to move forward or laterally while riding.
